The UK regulatory framework for contaminated land on nuclear-licenced sites and defence sites

Information paper for the SAFEGROUNDS Learning Network

Background

We invite your views and feedback regarding this document

This is the seventh version of a paper that was originally produced for the SAFEGROUNDS project steering group. It is intended to be a factual summary of the key features of the UK regulatory framework for the management of contaminated land on nuclear-licensed sites and defence sites.

The regulatory regimes included are those for radioactive contamination, no-radioactive contamination and mixed contamination on such sites, and on other sites where it is known or suspected that radioactive contamination may be present.

The paper incorporates information from the regulatory bodies of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, from UK government departments and from the devolved administrations but it is in no way a formal statement of their positions. Nor does it constitute legal advice.
